Moving your website off Wix
A Wix site cannot be moved. That is not our characterisation — it is Wix’s own documentation. So a migration off Wix is always a rebuild, and the good news is that a rebuild is an opportunity to fix everything that was never quite right.
Where you actually stand
Wix is a genuinely capable editor. Plenty of good-looking small-business sites are built on it, and if it is working for you there is no urgency here. But it is worth understanding what you actually have, because most Wix customers assume they have more portability than they do.
You can export data out of Wix — CMS collections as CSV, product lists, and blog posts through a request-based process. What you cannot export is the site. Not the design, not the layout, not the templates, not the code.
This matters most at the exact moment you least want a surprise: when you have outgrown Wix, or when you want a level of performance or search visibility the platform will not give you. At that point there is no migration path. There is only starting again — which is the thing we do.
You own your content. You do not own your website.
Wix is clear that the content you upload is yours, and that is worth crediting them for. But the site built around that content is a different question, and Wix’s help documentation answers it directly.
The practical translation: your words and your photos are yours to take. The website itself stays behind.
“Your Wix site is a standard HTML5 site, and is built with Wix’s technology. In order for your site to work properly, it needs to be hosted and operated on Wix’s servers.”
“All Wix copyrighted content can be used by Wix users within the Wix platform only. Users are not authorized to migrate Wix content outside of Wix.”
What this costs you day to day
There is no export, at all
Every other platform on this list gives you something on the way out, even if it is only a partial one. Wix gives you data exports and no site export. If you want off, somebody rebuilds it.
Performance has a ceiling you cannot raise
Wix renders a lot of its page content through JavaScript on their infrastructure. You can optimise your images and tidy your pages, but you cannot change how the platform delivers them, and that sets a floor under your load times.
Changing template means rebuilding anyway
Switching Wix templates does not carry your content across. If a redesign already means rebuilding the site, the question becomes what you want to rebuild it on.
Stop paying and the ads come back
Cancel a Premium plan and Wix keeps your site online — but it reverts to a wixsite.com address and Wix advertising appears on it. Your custom domain stops resolving to your business.
How the rebuild works
Six steps, and your involvement is deliberately minimal. We handle the technical side, bring you recommendations, and come to you when a decision or an approval is genuinely needed. You review the finished site before it goes live.
- 1
We audit your current website
We review your existing site — pages, content, SEO, functionality and structure. We identify what should be improved, updated or dropped, rather than copying over things that were never working.
- 2
We rebuild the site in Next.js
Your branding and content carry over, but the site is rebuilt from the ground up in Next.js. That removes the database and plugin dependencies behind most performance, security and maintenance problems.
For Wix specifically: Because there is nothing to import, we work from your live site. We crawl every page, capture the content, pull the images at full resolution, and map the URL structure so the redirects are complete. You do not retype anything and you do not have to hunt for original files.
- 3
We improve it while we rebuild it
This is the part people underestimate. We are not handing you a newer version of the same website. We look for real gains in navigation, page layout, calls to action, mobile experience, content and SEO.
- 4
We preserve your SEO
Existing URLs, page titles, metadata and redirects are all accounted for in the transition. The goal is to move platforms without giving up the search visibility you have already built.
- 5
We test everything before it goes live
Desktop and mobile, every form, every piece of functionality, all content reviewed — checked and working before we touch anything in production.
- 6
We launch
Once you approve it, we move the new site into production. From your side the transition should be uneventful, and your visitors should never see an interruption.
What comes with you
- Every page of content from your live Wix site
- Your images, pulled at full resolution and re-optimised
- Your branding — colours, type, logo, overall look
- Blog posts, with their URLs preserved or redirected
- Your domain, transferred into your name
- Contact and booking forms, rebuilt and tested
You own what we build. In writing.
Every rebuild is delivered with a Certificate of Ownership and IP Assignment: a signed document assigning you the copyright in the site code and the content we produce for you, and recording the transfer of the repository, the domain and the hosting account into your name. You are not licensing your website from us. If you ever leave, you take the whole thing with you — the code, the content, the domain, the repository and the deployment history.
- Full copyright assignment in the site code and the content we write for you.
- The Git repository transferred to an account you control, with its full history.
- The domain in your name, at a registrar of your choosing.
- Hosting in your own Vercel account if you want it there — we can manage it, but ownership sits with you.
- No proprietary page builder, no template licence, and nothing that stops working if you stop paying us.
Questions people ask about leaving Wix
- Can I just export my Wix site and host it somewhere else?
- No, and this comes straight from Wix: their site export article states that a Wix site "needs to be hosted and operated on Wix’s servers," and their copyright page says users "are not authorized to migrate Wix content outside of Wix." You can export CMS collections, product lists and blog posts as data. The site itself does not come with you.
- Do I lose my content if I leave Wix?
- Not if you rebuild rather than simply cancel. We capture everything off your live site before anything changes. Your content ends up in the new build, and your Wix site stays up untouched until you are ready to switch.
- What about my domain?
- Domains are portable. Wix allows site owners to transfer any domain in their account away from Wix, subject to the standard 60-day locks that apply after a registration, a transfer, or a change of registrant contact. We handle the transfer and the DNS cutover.
- Will my Wix site go down during the rebuild?
- No. Your Wix site runs normally the whole time. We build alongside it on a preview URL, you review it, and the only moment anything changes is the DNS switch at the end.
- Is Wix bad for SEO?
- It is not the disaster it was ten years ago, and pretending otherwise would be unfair. But you inherit their URL conventions, their rendering approach and their page-speed ceiling. A Next.js rebuild serves fully-rendered HTML with structured data on every page, which is what both search engines and AI answer engines read best.
