Moving your website off Weebly
Weebly is still online and still sells plans, and we are not going to tell you it is shutting down, because Square has not said that. What we will say is that a platform receiving minimal investment is a platform worth planning around before the decision gets made for you.
Where you actually stand
Let us be careful here, because there is a lot of confident misinformation about Weebly and we would rather be accurate than dramatic. Weebly is not discontinued. Square has not announced a sunset. The product is live and you can still sign up today.
What is observable is that Square, which acquired Weebly in 2018, has directed its development energy toward Square Online, and points new customers there. Weebly’s own website still carries a 2019 copyright notice in its footer. Those are signals of a product in maintenance, not of one being actively built.
A platform in maintenance is not an emergency. It is a planning horizon. The question worth asking is not whether Weebly will disappear next month, but whether you want your business’s front door sitting on a product nobody is investing in — and whether you would rather choose the moment you move than have it chosen for you.
Practically portable, but only as a static snapshot
Weebly does have an archive feature in the site editor that produces a zip of static HTML, images and stylesheets. That is more than Wix or GoDaddy offer, and it deserves acknowledgement.
The caveat is what a static archive actually is. It is a photograph of your site, not a working website. Contact forms stop functioning, because form handling lived on Weebly’s servers. It cannot be re-imported. And it is not a codebase anyone can maintain going forward — it is a frozen output.
So the archive is genuinely useful as a backup, and genuinely insufficient as a migration. We treat it as a reference and rebuild properly.
What this costs you day to day
A product on maintenance
Square directs new customers to Square Online. Weebly gets what it needs to keep running. Features, performance work and platform modernisation are going elsewhere.
The archive is a snapshot, not a site
Static HTML with no working forms and no way back in. Useful as a backup. Not something you or any developer can pick up and run with.
Dated output
Weebly’s templates and the markup underneath them reflect an earlier era of the web. Core Web Vitals and mobile expectations have moved on considerably since.
Limited SEO surface
Basic title and description control, minimal structured data, little say over how pages are rendered or how URLs are shaped.
How the rebuild works
Six steps, and your involvement is deliberately minimal. We handle the technical side, bring you recommendations, and come to you when a decision or an approval is genuinely needed. You review the finished site before it goes live.
- 1
We audit your current website
We review your existing site — pages, content, SEO, functionality and structure. We identify what should be improved, updated or dropped, rather than copying over things that were never working.
- 2
We rebuild the site in Next.js
Your branding and content carry over, but the site is rebuilt from the ground up in Next.js. That removes the database and plugin dependencies behind most performance, security and maintenance problems.
For Weebly specifically: We work from your live site rather than the archive, so we get the current state including anything added since your last export. If you do have an archive zip, send it — it is a useful cross-check for pages that might not be linked from your navigation.
- 3
We improve it while we rebuild it
This is the part people underestimate. We are not handing you a newer version of the same website. We look for real gains in navigation, page layout, calls to action, mobile experience, content and SEO.
- 4
We preserve your SEO
Existing URLs, page titles, metadata and redirects are all accounted for in the transition. The goal is to move platforms without giving up the search visibility you have already built.
- 5
We test everything before it goes live
Desktop and mobile, every form, every piece of functionality, all content reviewed — checked and working before we touch anything in production.
- 6
We launch
Once you approve it, we move the new site into production. From your side the transition should be uneventful, and your visitors should never see an interruption.
What comes with you
- All page content from your live site
- Images at full resolution, re-optimised
- Blog posts with their URLs preserved or redirected
- Your branding and layout, modernised
- Working contact forms — genuinely working, and tested
- Your domain, transferred into your name
You own what we build. In writing.
Every rebuild is delivered with a Certificate of Ownership and IP Assignment: a signed document assigning you the copyright in the site code and the content we produce for you, and recording the transfer of the repository, the domain and the hosting account into your name. You are not licensing your website from us. If you ever leave, you take the whole thing with you — the code, the content, the domain, the repository and the deployment history.
- Full copyright assignment in the site code and the content we write for you.
- The Git repository transferred to an account you control, with its full history.
- The domain in your name, at a registrar of your choosing.
- Hosting in your own Vercel account if you want it there — we can manage it, but ownership sits with you.
- No proprietary page builder, no template licence, and nothing that stops working if you stop paying us.
Questions people ask about leaving Weebly
- Is Weebly shutting down?
- Not that Square has announced, and we are not going to claim otherwise. Weebly is live and still selling plans. What is visible is that Square steers new customers to Square Online and that Weebly receives little development attention. That is a reason to plan, not a reason to panic.
- Can I export my Weebly site?
- There is an archive function in the site editor that produces a zip of static HTML, images and stylesheets. It is a useful backup. It is not a working website — form handling ran on Weebly’s servers and does not come with it — and it cannot be re-imported anywhere, including back into Weebly.
- My Weebly site works fine. Why move?
- If it genuinely works and you are getting the enquiries you want, there is no urgency. The reasons people do move are speed, search visibility, and not wanting their business sitting on a platform in maintenance mode. Ask us for a review and see what it actually says about your site before deciding.
- What about my Weebly store?
- Worth discussing before you commit. Product and customer data need deliberate handling and are not covered by the archive. We will look at your catalogue and tell you the sensible path before you sign anything.
