Moving your website off Web.com or Network Solutions
Web.com is being folded into Network Solutions — both are Newfold Digital brands, and web.com legal documents now resolve to Newfold’s legal site. If your website has been sitting there for years quietly collecting a monthly charge, this is a reasonable moment to look at what you actually have.
Where you actually stand
We are going to be more careful on this page than on some of the others, because the documentation supports less. We read the relevant agreements and we are only going to tell you what they actually say.
Two things are clearly documented. First, the Professional Services Agreement states that any third-party assets used to design and develop the website are owned by the company or its licensors and cannot be transferred to you. Second, the Web Hosting Services terms state that if your hosting is terminated, moving your website off their server is your responsibility, and that they will not transfer or FTP your website to another provider.
What we did not find is any clause claiming ownership of your website, or any clause prohibiting you from migrating it. We are not going to imply otherwise. The honest summary is that you are on your own on the way out, not that you are contractually trapped.
Nobody is stopping you leaving. Nobody is helping you either.
Their hosting terms actually contemplate you moving the site off — they simply make clear that doing it is your job, not theirs, and that their servers are not an archive.
The transferable-assets question is the one to watch. If designers used licensed stock imagery, fonts or components on your site, those are owned by the company or its licensors and do not come to you. Copying them across to a new site would not be right, so we identify them and replace them with assets you own outright.
“any Third Party Assets used to design and develop the Website are owned by Company or its licensors and cannot be transferred to you.”
“In the event your use of the Hosting Services is terminated, moving your website off the Network Solutions server is your responsibility. Network Solutions will not transfer or FTP your website to another provider.”
What this costs you day to day
You move it yourself, or nobody does
The hosting terms state moving your website off their server is your responsibility and that they will not transfer or FTP it to another provider. Their servers, in their words, are not an archive.
Third-party design assets stay behind
Licensed imagery, fonts and components used in your design are owned by the company or its licensors and cannot be transferred to you.
Aging platform, brand in transition
Web.com is being consolidated into Network Solutions. Products in the middle of a brand consolidation are rarely receiving investment.
Fees are non-refundable and early termination may cost
The Professional Services Agreement provides for non-refundable fees and possible early termination charges. Read your own agreement before you cancel anything.
How the rebuild works
Six steps, and your involvement is deliberately minimal. We handle the technical side, bring you recommendations, and come to you when a decision or an approval is genuinely needed. You review the finished site before it goes live.
- 1
We audit your current website
We review your existing site — pages, content, SEO, functionality and structure. We identify what should be improved, updated or dropped, rather than copying over things that were never working.
- 2
We rebuild the site in Next.js
Your branding and content carry over, but the site is rebuilt from the ground up in Next.js. That removes the database and plugin dependencies behind most performance, security and maintenance problems.
For Web.com specifically: We rebuild from your live site, so their non-assistance on the way out costs you nothing. We will also flag anything that looks like licensed third-party imagery and replace it with assets you own — which is both the correct thing to do and better for you long term.
- 3
We improve it while we rebuild it
This is the part people underestimate. We are not handing you a newer version of the same website. We look for real gains in navigation, page layout, calls to action, mobile experience, content and SEO.
- 4
We preserve your SEO
Existing URLs, page titles, metadata and redirects are all accounted for in the transition. The goal is to move platforms without giving up the search visibility you have already built.
- 5
We test everything before it goes live
Desktop and mobile, every form, every piece of functionality, all content reviewed — checked and working before we touch anything in production.
- 6
We launch
Once you approve it, we move the new site into production. From your side the transition should be uneventful, and your visitors should never see an interruption.
What comes with you
- All page content, captured from the live site
- Your own photography and content at full resolution
- Your branding and business information
- Existing URLs, preserved or 301 redirected
- Licensed third-party assets replaced with ones you own
- Your domain, in your name
You own what we build. In writing.
Every rebuild is delivered with a Certificate of Ownership and IP Assignment: a signed document assigning you the copyright in the site code and the content we produce for you, and recording the transfer of the repository, the domain and the hosting account into your name. You are not licensing your website from us. If you ever leave, you take the whole thing with you — the code, the content, the domain, the repository and the deployment history.
- Full copyright assignment in the site code and the content we write for you.
- The Git repository transferred to an account you control, with its full history.
- The domain in your name, at a registrar of your choosing.
- Hosting in your own Vercel account if you want it there — we can manage it, but ownership sits with you.
- No proprietary page builder, no template licence, and nothing that stops working if you stop paying us.
Questions people ask about leaving Web.com
- Does Web.com own my website?
- We could not find a clause saying so, and we are not going to claim one exists. What their agreements do say is that third-party assets used in the design cannot be transferred to you, and that moving your site off their servers is your responsibility. Read your own agreement — terms vary by product and by when you signed.
- Will they help me move my site?
- Their Web Hosting Services terms say no: "Network Solutions will not transfer or FTP your website to another provider," and moving it is your responsibility. That is why we work from the live site — no cooperation needed.
- What about the images on my site?
- Anything you supplied is yours. Anything licensed from third parties as part of the design is, by their agreement, owned by the company or its licensors and cannot be transferred. We identify those and replace them with imagery you own outright.
- Can I keep my domain?
- Network Solutions is an accredited registrar and domains registered there belong to you, transferable under the standard rules. Check the WHOIS registrant record to confirm your business is listed, and we will handle the transfer or the DNS change.
